Great Egret

(Ardea alba)

 Size: 40 inches



Adult bird:
All white with short plumes. Color of legs and bill not as intense as is when breeding.

Breeding adult bird: White with long plumes that extend down back past the tail. Bill is yellow to orange. Legs and feet are black. Lores green.

Immature bird: All white but lacks plumes and has a dark tip on a yellow bill.

Similar species: Reddish Egret, Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret.

Habitat: Freshwater marshes, salt marshes, wooded swamps and urban environments.

Breeding: In Florida, January- June.
