Pileated Woodpecker
(Dryocopus pileatus)

 Size: 17 inches 


Adult Male:
Black with prominent white markings from bill to shoulder, and on throat. A bright red crest begins at forehead and extends to nape. It is accented by a hint of white and a bold black line beginning in front of eye and continuing down neck. Another spot of red highlights the check. Big yellow eye. The underwing is lined with white. 

Adult Female: The female lacks the spot of red near base of bill on cheek. The white markings on her face, neck and shoulder are less distinct.

Habitat: All forest habitats.

A Florida resident.
