Red-bellied Woodpecker
(Melanerpes carolinus)

 Size: 9 ½ inches


Male adult bird:
Black and white barred back, tails and wings. Forehead, crown and nape red. Cheeks and underparts are tan with pale reddish wash on lower belly.

Female adult bird: Tan crown and forehead. Red nape.

Breeding: No significant change.

Immature bird: Streaky breast and a dark crown, no red.

Similar species: Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Hairy and Downy Woodpecker.

Habitat: Deciduous forests, pine forests and residential areas.

Breeding: In Florida, March-July.
